Celebrating Cauvery

Background

Flowing through the Deccan Plateau, the river Cauvery is a link between the cultural past of Southern India and its present. However, the river is endangered by various industrial effluents, sewage pollutants and sand mining on a rampant scale, mainly for the benefit of major urban centers such as Bangalore, as well as by proposed developmental projects like the linking of rivers and dams on the river.

Celebrating Cauvery on the occasion of the 7th International Day of Action Against Dams: For River, Water, and Life at Vikasana (a school supporting ecological and community development, located on Kanakpura Road) and Sangam (the confluence point of the Cauvery and the Arkavathi) on March 13, and 14, 2004 respectively, was aimed at raising voices in unison against destructive water development projects and pollution of rivers, reclaiming the health of rivers and watersheds and demanding an equitable and sustainable management of waterways.

ESG is an independent not-for-profit organisation that promotes the cause of environmental and social justice through research, documentation, advocacy, training and campaign support. We aim to support the rights of local communities and voiceless ecosystems in a responsible, progressive manner that keeps contextual complexities in mind.
