Youth Workshops

Sustainable Development for the youth of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands - November 28th, 2007

Workshop with students from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

On November 28th, 2007 ESG conducted a one day workshop on environmental issues and movements in the country for students from the AndamanNicobar Islands. The objective of the program was to build the capacity of the local youth to participate in the development initiatives that are operating in the islands. It aimed at both creating a cadre of informed leaders and empowering the community through this group of trainees. The workshop was interactive and learner-centred, keeping in mind individual needs through lectures, case studies, group discussion and field visit.

Students of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

About 38 students participated in the workshop. As part of the programme, the trainees went for a visit to the Handi Gondi hills to understand ESGs interventions and strategies to stop both the carving of a Buddha statue on the monolithic rock and the mushrooming of amusement parks and other recreational centres on the forest land, endemic to threatened species of birds and home to the sloth bear. The program was in coordination with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration.

ESG is an independent not-for-profit organisation that promotes the cause of environmental and social justice through research, documentation, advocacy, training and campaign support. We aim to support the rights of local communities and voiceless ecosystems in a responsible, progressive manner that keeps contextual complexities in mind.
