Dam across river Kali running into rough weather

JOIDA (UK dist), Aug 21 (DHNS)

The dam to be constructed across river Kali near Maulangi by Murdeshwara Power Corporation Limited (MPCL) seem to be running into rough weather with the taluk BJP unit stating that the report prepared by an American consultancy firm on the feasibilty of the dam was not correct.

Addressing a press conference here, taluk BJP president Ravi Redakara said that the report given by Ernst and Young did not have a mention of the name of Joida taluk. The people of the taluk have not been consulted on the issue, and we will not allow it to come up until the people are involved in making some decisions, he said. ''When the instance of people losing their land and their livelihood when the Supa dam was constructed is fresh in our mind, how can we allow such thing to happen again,`` he said.

Mr Redakara said that the project will take around 200 acres of land and will submerge thick teak forest in the vicinity of dam, which has not been mentioned in the report. ''Instead of putting up the information on the project in Joida taluk tahsildar`s office, it has been put up at the Haliyala tahsildar`s office.`` He said that they were ready to have talks with the concerned authorities.

About the ''Bison Resorts`` coming up in the vicinity of the Supa reservoir, he said that he had written a letter to the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police to investigate the project.
