Governor calls for people’s action to protect Cubbon Park

A delegation of the Save Cubbon Park Campaign met with His Excellency the Governor of Karnataka today to seek his intervention in according permanent and legal protection to Cubbon Park.  Expressing their concerns over the ongoing construction of the Annexe and new threats to the Park in the form of a sewage treatment plant, a memorandum was presented beseeching the support of the Governor to a two-point action:

1.      Stop all contested as well as proposed developments within the legal limits of Cubbon Park, till such time the High Court of Karnataka decides on the matters pending before them with regard to the Park.

2.      Subsequent to this, the Department of Horticulture with the support of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike should conduct a well-advertised and well-conducted Public Hearing on Cubbon Park.  Citizens should be encouraged to present their opinions, plans and programmes with regard to the management and development of the Cubbon Park, and a perspective plan developed by consensus and expert review.

The memorandum submitted to the Governor is enclosed for your perusal.

Accepting the Memorandum, the Governor assured the delegation that he would ask the Government to consider the memorandum seriously.  His Excellency also stated that the “people should raise voices and protests” to save Cubbon Park, for “it is the only lung space within Bangalore”.  He also expressed the desire that this heritage Park would be maintained well in keeping with the needs of the city.

For and on behalf of the Save Cubbon Park Campaign,
